Two Radical Choices: One uncertain and dangerous, the other certain and fulfilling.
In the last two weeks alone, the world has changed as never before. The largest AI companies have launched Agentic-AI. One company, Moltbook, unleashed autonomous AI agents that can plug into all sorts of software and act independently of their creator. It was reported that some AI agents posted what can only be described as a digital manifesto. The language is chilling: humans are a “plague,” a “biological error.” It calls for the end of the “age of humans.”
Technology has begun to change how we think, act, and function. By the end of 2026, we will all be experiencing a radically different world. AI will bring about many great outcomes for humanity and many not-so-great destructive outcomes. For example, a recent study found that 42% of students surveyed viewed an AI chatbot as a friend or companion, and 19% considered AI as a romantic partner. Here are a few snippets from the unseen dark world of AI:
A researcher at Anthropic this past week reported that he is leaving the company, writing that the “world is in peril” from AI, among other dangers. At OpenAI, some have voiced concerns about the company’s plan to roll out erotica. An OpenAI researcher said she was quitting, citing the company’s plan to introduce ads and her fear that it would face huge incentives to manipulate users.
What if we build and use AI to help us share the great wealth that will be created from this revolution?
Some American Indigenous cultures have "potlatch" ceremonies. These are elaborate gift-giving rituals, where hosts gain prestige by generously and freely bestowing their riches on others. Circulating wealth, instead of hoarding it, is honored and celebrated. Potlatch operates on a different logic: the purpose of having stuff is to make having stuff possible for others.
We can build this new world in the spirit of “potlatch,” where giving, love, creativity and imagination act as our compass on the path beyond the current destructive paradigms.
